Malignant Melanoma

Melanoma is a malignancy of melanocytes and nevus cells. Although all of the causes of melanomas are not known with certainity, epidemiologic studies imply intense exposure of affected individuals to UV A (longer wavelength radiation)

High risk groups of those developing melanomas are:
  • Fair skinned individuals whose skin burns easily upon exposure to UV radiation. Type 1, 2
  • Individuals with numerous naevi or large congential melanocytic nevi
  • Persons who have had melanoma or if a blood relative has been diagnosed with malignant melanoma.
The melanoma metastasizes quickly and is lethal.
Regular check ups are therefore very necessary for their early detection.

Our practice offers the latest technology for the early detection and diagnosis including the classical dermatoscope as well as the video assisted dermal scan. (microscope).
Suspicious lesions are usually completely removed surgically and sent for dermopathological analysis.
